On the morning of March 20, 1978, I and Thomas were married in a civil
ceremony at the Chicago City Hall. It was only me, Thomas and the judge.
Our license cost $15.00 and we argued about who's going to pay for it. I
think Thomas did. After the ceremony, we went to a photo studio and had our
pictures taken. It was $50 a copy. What a rip-off! So, we just paid for
one copy. Then, we had lunch at "Beef n' Brandy" and had
"beef-n-brouchette".
I and Thomas bought a 2-flat in the Albany Park area of Chicago in April,
1983. I found out that I belong to Our Lady of Mercy parish. I, Elaine,
Alice,
Bruno, Margret, etc. organized a parish choir. We sung every 11 AM mass and
most of the time, Lorrina was the altar girl.
I was cantoring all the time for many masses in church and being a Catholic,
I know that I cannot take Holy Communion unless I'm married in
church.
Thomas agreed to marry in church with no fanfare...just pull anybody from
the street as witness. That's what we told the priest and we were grilled
for 3 months. I told Tom I'm a Catholic and I didn't believe in divorce.
Annette found out about my plan to get married and decided to help to put
up a nice wedding with flower girls, cake, etc. The wedding cake was
donated by Annette. The video and champagne were donated, too...and we got
a place in Touhy called "The Magic Wok" that charged me $3.00 a
plate.
We only planned for a month and Thomas didn't know the specifics. When his
friends congratulated him about him getting married, he was
surprised. He said he was married already.
I'll write more later....
